Employee Motivation Dublin

Employee motivation Dublin: A third of people struggle to cope at work because of stress, depression or burn out, according to a survey by the Depression Alliance UK. And, until now, the stigma of mental health and the cost of providing support has been stopping employers from addressing the issue.

The London City Mental Health Alliance, a coalition of City of London-based businesses – including KPMG, Deloitte and Bank of America – was launched last year to break down this stigma and create a culture where mental wellbeing is nurtured as part of good business practice.

This is seen as a major step forward in employers tackling the 360 degree view of employee motivation in the workplace. Employers are not responsible for their employees but if underlying problems are ignored it will impact the business.

Cost to business

Across Europe, mental health problems cost workplaces £77 billion annually, with the greatest economic loss coming through absenteeism and lost productivity, according to a recent report by the London School of Economics (LSE).

And this is happening in the next generation of Irish employees. Research by Gradireland, which offers career advice to Irish graduates, reported that about 25% of employers said their graduates lacked confidence.

“It is worrying there is still a major stigma associated with depression and many employers are not dealing with it adequately,” said LSE’s Professor Martin Knapp.

Dublin employers need to learn from the likes of KPMG and Bank of America in pro-actively looking after their employees, especially as another positive business cycle is on the way.

Psychotherapy/counselling is the proven way to address underlying professional and personal issues, freeing up employees to be more present and motivated at work, boosting workplace morale.

Employees recognise this as 76% of Dublin workers feel there is a need for counselling in the workplace. (Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, IACP, survey 2013)
